So; What’s up for September?
The summer is slowly coming to an end, the festival season is almost finished, and sadly the days are becoming a bit shorter, this can mean only one thing: clubbing season is here!
We kick off September on Saturday the 1st with a bit of a power-duo from out of town. From Nijmegen, Sanja will be teaming up with Tilburg resident Joel Hemmen. Sanja, who recently got signed over at the Slapfunk family is well known for her stripped back and rolling approach to house music. Having recently played the Slapfunk Summer Gathering over at BRET, she’s also slowly manifesting herself as a house hero here in Amsterdam. Joel, we know for his house music with a lot of 90’s influences. These two as a team will make the foundations of Volkshotel tremble for sure.
The weekend after on the 7th and 8th of September we have quite an international weekend lined up. On Friday we invited Marina Trench to come over from Paris, France. We asked her to go into selector-modus for our most recent podcast, which you can listen to below. For the Canvas Nacht she will be bringing her house records for a night of proper dancing. She’ll be joined by friend & resident Aurelius, who is a cornerstone in the Canvas programming. The day after it’s Italian time – I’ve recently been teaming up with a lot of Italian DJ’s & collectives, which will be visible in the following months to come. We kick off the Italian connection with Cosimo Colella, one of the Sound Department Ascoti aficionado’s and Italian/NY house connaisseur pur sang. Seawolf head-honcho DJ Senc is joining him for some paradise mix greatness.
The 14th it’s time for Tim Hoeben and David Cornelissen. Back in the day Tim, David and me used to work together behind the bar in legendary club Trouw. It’s fun to see how these two grew in the Amsterdam night scene. Tim working his ass off over at the DGTL crew, and with David in charge of the programme over at Noorderschip, these two definitely have the experience on how to host a proper night out.
Saturday the 15th we’re gearing up for the third installment of They Sleep We Grind, we celebrate the end of the summer with heavy disco cuts, oldschool vibes, italo dancers and sweaty house rollers. Exciting stuff with Lex MC Can (TUR) and Fizzy Fudge in the booth.
On the second to last weekend of September we’re up for a serious selector workout with Kléo and Flashy T hosting the Friday evening. With his weekly livestream ‘Flash Forward’ every Friday afternoon, Flashy T has been broadcasting good vibes for some time now. It’s great to have him on board for a night of grooving mystical music choices. He’s joined by Kléo, she’s the booker over at Café Belgique. And with credentials like Dekmantel Festival, shows at Red Light Radio and recently a gig at Lowlands, she’s one of the Dutch rising stars at the moment.
The 22nd we have the Unmute boys over for a night of madness. Over the course of the last year, Unmute has been hosting several, streaming nights, rooftop- and regular club parties. In short: they know how to party. Join them for some booty shaking fun on this Saturday.
The last weekend of September it’s time for More Bounce. With bi-monthly evenings in Canvas for the past year, they are one of the collectives that form the Canvas sound as a whole. They are knee-deep in the future funk world, and always know how to invite the funkiest up-and-coming & very established artists for a night of madness. This time they invite UK’s Sven Atterton, this multi facetted instrumentalist will bring his fresh take on 80’s boogie with a twist. I’m personally greatly looking forward to this one. The last Saturday of September it’s Alison Swing, everybody! She’s back babbbbyyyyyy. The LA legend who moved to Berlin last year has taken over the EU by storm in a year. With fresh residencies at clubs like Wilde Renate, recently signing at Sense the Real and of course her gig here in Canvas she’s making waves quickly in the EU scene. The Match Box boys are joining this night. With a keen eye for classic cuts & selections, they’re bound to open & close the night in style.
All right, that about sums it up for this months Dancefloor Maintenance. All in all, we have a nice varied programme in Canvas, that shows a lot of the different ways we can go with the place, while still sticking to our core purpose: making sure that people are having a great night out. I’d like to give a short special shout-out to Hellie Berry this month. With her ongoing crusade for more females in the DJ booth, she helped me open my eyes a bit to booking more female talent here in Canvas, and helping me along the way with some great suggestions – who we’ll surely see over the course of the next couple of months. Anyways, I’m greatly looking forward to kick off this new club season in style, and with a programme like we have in September, this is bound to happen. As always;
