Beer out of rainwater

Besides the obvious clogs, tulips and cheese Holland’s famous for its water. And there’s a lot to go around. Last June was a record breaking rainy month. All of this rainwater is normally spilled in the sewer. A shame. That’s why in collaboration with brewery De Prael, students of Hogeschool van Amsterdam and MediaLAB Amsterdam we’re now making rainwater into a tasty beer.

From rooftop to parking lot
The process starts at the top of Volkshotel. From the green rooftop, the water travels through our building into a quite ugly container on our parking lot. Every drop is being saved, until it consists 1000 liters of water. When the container is full, the water gets filtered and transported to brewery De Prael. Where the brewers work their magic to create a damn tasty beer.

Green Knowledge Mile
From the Rembrandt tower until the Rembrandt house, the Wibautstraat is also known as the Knowledge Mile. Rainwater project ‘Hemelswater’ is part of the Green Knowledge Mile project. By combining forces The Green Knowledge Mile tries to transform the once ugly and unattractive Wibautstraat into the smartest and greenest street of the country. With smart experiments that will improve air quality, reduce city heat and simply make the Wibautstraat a more inviting area for everyone.

Rainwater ideas
