How to visit Amsterdam on a budget

Hotspots

Alright, we’re going to be honest with you: Amsterdam is not your cheapest city to visit. Fortunately, there are enough free activities, cheap lunch places and budget restaurants in town. With our tips you will have a fun time in the city, even with little money. So be cheap and explore our list!

Free activities

Green Areas & Parks
Going to the park is always a good idea. Not only because it gives you a much needed break from the hectic city life, but also because it doesn’t cost a single penny. Grab a book and check out some of favourite green areas & parks in Amsterdam: Oosterpark, Flevopark, Park Frankendeal, Amstelpark and Amsterdamse Bos. Fore more check our Google Maps list.

Free Concerts
In Amsterdam you can attend free concerts almost every day. The Dutch National Opera & Ballet offers free concerts every Tuesday afternoon. The Conservatorium van Amsterdam (CvA) provides concerts with free admission regularly. View the CvA concert agenda for the exact details and locations. In  Muziekgebouw aan ‚t IJ you can enjoy a free lunch concert once a month and Bimhuis organizes free events every week. At Jazz Café Alto you can listen to jazz every night for the price of one or two beers. For more live music places check our Google Maps list.

Natural Swimming Spots
In for a splash? There are several natural swimming spots in Amsterdam that are freely accessible. Our go-to’s are Marineterrein, Stenen Hoofd, Entrepotdok and Bogortuin. Do note that some spots can get really crowded on hot Summer days. But hey, beggars cannot be choosers right? Fore more check our Google Maps list.

Budget lunch

After all that action we understand you’re in for a tasty and cheap lunch. Tigris & Eufraat, Caldi e freddi and Eetsalon Van Dobben surely won’t disappoint you on this matter. Tigris & Eufraat in Amsterdam-East specializes in Middle Eastern products and delicacies such as fresh falafel, tabouleh, and hummus. For traditional Italian takeaway Caldi e freddi is your go-to. They serve sandwiches, lasagne, pizzas and pasta. Want to go Dutch? (pun intended) Then get a ‘broodje kroket’ at the authentic Eetsalon van Dobben in the centre. For more cheap lunch places check our Google Maps list.

Budget restaurants

Besides cheap lunch places, Amsterdam also offers a variety of budget restaurants. We’re fond of Klaproos, Skek, and Fou Fow Ramen. Here you can fill your stomach without having to spend an arm and a leg. Klaproos in Amsterdam North is a pop-up pizza and pasta restaurant, with prices ranging from 11 to 15 euros. At Skek – a student-run restaurant and bar near Amsterdam’s Red Light District – dishes cost around 13 euros on average. Fou Fow is the place for tasty and reasonably priced ramen noodles, starting at 12 euros. Fore more restaurants check our Google Maps list.

Budget accommodation

Last but not least, you need an affordable place to sleep. Our private cabins come with a double bed, a safe, and just enough room for your luggage. Furthermore, there is a shared bathroom and toilet. Ideal for the smallest of budgets.
