Marjolein asks herself: can you connect with who you essentially are and let go of your identity? She wants to show that we all carry ‘types’ within us. Marjolein has drawn inspiration from, among others, ‘Goddesses in everywoman’ and ‘Gods in everyman’ by Jean Shinoda Bolen. Each part of the installation Starway to Heaven is a personification, which Marjolein links to an archetypal goddess.
Marjolein: “I found out that I feel more connected to one archetype than another. But by literally giving all parts of myself space, I make room for myself to BE. And I want to tell the viewer: you are good just the way you are!”
The expo includes totem-like installations, wearable art, accessories, masks and photographs. Also on display is part of Marjolein’s collection ‘Inside-Out’. With this she won a prestigious prize in New Zealand. The series of goddesses are composed of garments, previously worn in fashion performances; in the nightlife, at music festivals and art events. Marjolein transforms her clothing designs into art objects: a previously worn jacket becomes a headdress.
Costumes previously presented in ‘fleeting’ shows are now immortalized and honored in these installations. Each item has been reused, worn by different people and been in a variety of places. It radiates the energy of the wearer and the moment. It has written history and been given a soul. Marjolein: “My work invites you to make the connection with your divine essence: You’re a Star!”
