Bike rental & canal ride
Obvious, but no less fun: rent a bicycle and take a trip along the canals of Amsterdam. With approximately 75 kilometers of ‘grachten’, you should be occupied for a little while. Insiders tip: at Volkshotel you can already rent a bike for 12 euros a day.
Sculpture garden at Rijksmuseum
Don’t feel like making a reservation or having to queue for the Rijksmuseum? Luckily they also have a beautiful garden around the museum full of sculptures, which is free to visit for everyone.
Sunday market Westergasfabriek
The Sunday market at the Westergas area is an outdoor art, fashion, and design market, where designers, artists, and other creatives sell their wares directly to the public. Apart from shopping, there’s plenty to do including creative workshops, live music, and of course hanging around in the surrounding Westerpark.
On the other side of the IJ river, you’ll find the NDSM wharf. It’s a former shipyard and turned into a fun cultural hotspot in recent years with a vibrant artist community and a wide variety of bars and restaurants. Once a month you can also visit one of the biggest flea markets of Europe in the IJ-hallen. A free ferry from central station takes you to the NDSM area in 20 minutes.
Concerts in Paradiso
Who says concerts are not possible nowadays? Music venue Paradiso has taken extensive safety measures to be able to host concerts and programs. They are allowed to accommodate a maximum of 250 visitors and there is special routing throughout the building, so everyone can keep a 1,5-meter distance from others. There are a lot of interesting concerts coming up, so be sure to check out their agenda.
Het HEM is located on the Hembrug site in Zaandam. It’s a multidisciplinary place with exhibition rooms, a library, a cafe-restaurant, and a hi-fi music bar. Until 2003 the building used to be a bullet factory, so it has enormous spaces and a length of 200 meters, which makes it very suitable to visit during these times.
Goat farm in Amsterdamse Bos
In the middle of the Amsterdamse Bos you will find an organic goat farm, where goats, chickens, cows, pigs, a horse run round. The milk from the goats gets processed into various types of cheese, yogurt, butter, cottage cheese, and even ice cream (which is really delicious!).
Sit Down Sessions in Sound Bar Doka
Sound bar Doka is located in the basement of Volkshotel. Every Friday and Saturday you can enjoy a very intimate sit-down listening session with a DJ. The line-up ranges from Elias Mazian to Kamma & Masalo and from FS Green to Identified Patient, so there is something to everyone’s liking.
Hot tubs in Volkshotel
What’s better than ending a day full of activities in a hot tub? Exactly, not much. On the rooftop of Volkshotel, you’ll find Badplaats. This is the place to sweat out your hangover in a sauna or hang out till your fingers shrivel in one of the hot tubs. All with a view over the city. Do note that Badplaats is currently only accessible for hotel guests.
