Chalkboard drawing ‘The Garden’ by Sioejeng Tsao

With a piece of chalk (or several), a black wall and no restrictions, we invite creatives to let loose on our lobby chalkboard. Amsterdam-born illustrator and feminist Sioejeng Tsao (SEEYOUSIOE) explored the theme ‘love’ in her creation: The Garden.

How did you come up with the design for The Garden?

“I always use my main character – the girl with the fringe – and build a world around her. Since this theme was Love, I decided I want to make two lovers instead of one, because to me love is free and knows no boundaries. The leaves stand for mother nature and the geometric shapes are in line with my style for graphic design.”

What would you like people to think when they see your chalkboard drawing?

“If it makes them stand still for a second and actually look at it, I would be happy. And hopefully spread this message of free love too. To me, my art ties in with my activism. I look for opportunities to display various social aspects in a colorful way. And this time in black and white.”

How would you describe your work?

“Colorful! So this chalkboard was somewhat out of my comfort zone. My style mostly has a dark twist, in some way. Besides an illustrator, I’m also a creative director. I work in a creative agency for three days a week and use my home as my studio. I also have a clothing line called ‘Sick kids of Amsterdam, that centers around sustainability and fair-trade materials.”

Sioejeng’s chalkboard drawing is on display in Werkplaats now.
