Volkshotel invites…. Oedipus Brewing

Oedipus Brewing started out as a couple of friends, brewing beers in their own kitchen. Slowly, Oedipus beers are taking over the city. Coming Friday we will launche the special ‘Volkspils’ they’ve brewed for us. Time for a chat with Rick Nelson, one of the founders of Oedipus Brewing.

So, when did you became fascinated by beer?
In 2011, we’ve started out as a group of friends, brewing in our own kitchen just because we all like beer. It took about a year before we got more serious about it and started brewing in a professional way. ‘Mannenliefde’ was the first real beer that we produced on a bigger scale and it’s still the best sold and most popular. We just want to create beers that people like and provides them other flavours that they’re not used to. At the moment we have eight beers, all unique and have one special ingredient.

You’ve created a special Volkspils for Volkshotel. What’s the idea behind it?
We thought of a beer that people would like to drink every hour of the day. Besides a hotel, Volkshotel is a place to work, drink and spend your free time. So it had to be a simple, light and fresh pilsner. During a brainstorm with Thijs Timmers (co-owner of Canvas, Doka and Werkplaats) we came up with cucumber as the key ingredient. It was a challenge because it has quite a strong taste, but we found the right subtle blend. Exciting, because it’ll be produced on a big scale. The first reactions are very positive, so we’re happy!

What’s the next step?
At the moment, we’re busy establishing our own Brew Pub. We’ve started organizing tastings and sharing knowledge about the proces of brewing at festivals. Our ambition is to continue this on a more definite location. The idea is to have beer tastings on a regular basis, expand our assortment and incorporate good food as part of the experience. We want it to be a relaxed place for friends to hang out, drink, eat and chill. Music has always been a big part of who we are, so we’ll definitely invite artists and musicians to steal the spotlight at times. We’re hoping to open up in December, but we’ll keep everybody updated.
