Chalkboard Drawing ‘Support in Balance’ By Gabi Brunhoso

With a piece of chalk (or several), a black wall and no restrictions, we invite creatives to let loose on our lobby chalkboard. Introducing University of the Arts-student Gabi Brunhoso, who is almost 25 years old and was born in Amsterdam. Her design for the chalkboard, ‘Support in Balance’, was loosely inspired by Volkshotel.

“Drawing and painting have been my favorite things to do for as long as I can remember, so when I ended up studying Illustration, no one was surprised. Working with analogue techniques has my preference and you can recognize my work by the dynamic figures (the naked butts), playful scenes and cheerful colors. That last characteristic meant this chalkboard was a new experience for me. Losing the colors made even me more aware of the compositions and line play.”

“The design for ‘Support in Balance’ was based on the thought that if we all support each other, together we can create something great. It’s loosely based on Volkshotel, because it has become a mishmash with so many different visitors and activities that compliment and inspire each other. This message is portrayed in an easy breezy way, because fun is always an important aspect of my work. In this design you repeatedly see naked figures, they symbolize total freedom and my fascination for the flexible human body to me.”

“I hope that people who see this work, encounter a cheerful image that will trigger their own fantasies and associations. Oh, and in the pictures you can see I had my headphones on during my 6 hour drawing session. I was listening to Gavinco – Amour Fou a lot, in case you were wondering!”

Gabi’s chalkboard drawing is on display in Werkplaats now. Want to see more of Gabi’s work? Check out her Instagram
