Tell us a little about yourself….
I’m Dewy, a 23 year old girl from Amsterdam, currently studying at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. I started in advertising but it wasn’t for me, deep down art is my lifelong passion. Ever since I was born I found myself drawing, visualizing or writing stories.
What inspires you to draw?
Well my main inspiration comes from all the different people I meet and the things I see, hear and do. My drawing style is inspired by remix culture, so I try to combine different styles together to make it one. I have a love-hate relationship with perfection – I’m a perfectionist but I like weird, non-perfect art. I see the beauty in faces with imperfections and I like to capture that in my drawings.
What’s your relationship with Volkshotel?
My parents live just around the corner, so I’ve seen the place grow. We all love the cultural vibe at Volkshotel.
…And the inspiration for the chalkboard?
Since the Volkshotel is a meeting point for a lot of people and I draw faces a lot, it seemed to be a perfect fit, they both come together in the illustration on the wall.
