‘VOLKSHOTEL SOUNDS’ – Jana Babincova (Prague, CZ)
Moving chairs, steps, clatter of heels, conversations, music, voices, scuffing foot, clanking dishes, passing cars, laughing. The soundscape of Volkshotel is the inspiration and working material for the installation VOLKSHOTEL SOUNDS. The work translates the sounds into lightweight, abstract shapes, reminding of the intangibility of what we hear and cannot see.
‘IN THE MORNING, I OCCASIONALLY SHAVED, GOT DRESSED AND AS USUAL, WAS HANGING AROUND, SNOOZES OFF, SHOOK UP AND STARTED DOING SOMETHING’ – Marcel Hiller (Cologne, DE)
Departure point for Hiller’s installation, theory of group performing by Bruce Tuckman and its five phases: forming, storming, norming and performing. The phase model and management terminology has the ability to transform unpleasant elements into productive ones. In his work, Hiller investigates this theory by connecting it with the specific elements and leftovers of the hotel’s transformation process, creating a new visual vocabulary.
‘THE SCENARIOS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT’ (S.R.D.P) – Sighle Breathnach-Cashell (Belfast, IR)
This work was initiated at Volkshotel to determine how to exert control over the guests’ behavior using the hotel’s existing furniture. Each ‘SCENARIO’ can be utilized for specific purposes, the various chairs and tables create interchangeable hierarchies. ‘SCENARIOS’ will be constructed to inform a range of activities such as charity dinners, business meetings, sexual encounters and symposiums.
Project Unexpected #1 was the first artist in residency project in Volkshotel and was curated by Alexandra Landré.
