When you see a long line outside a yellow, brown shop and smell the sweet scent of freshly baked bread, you know you’re in the right place. Hartog’s has been baking bread since 1896. It’s probably the most famous bakery of Amsterdam with the best bread according to many. They don’t just bake beautiful bread using a 100-year old recipe, but also mill their own wheat into wholemeal flour. Mireille: “I call it honest bread because of the good ingredients. And that’s exactly how it tastes.”

Mireille first came here when she was a little girl. Her dad lived nearby so this was the place where they bought their bread. “Now I live in my dad’s old house alongside the Amstel river. I still buy my bread here. Besides the bread, I can recommend buying their apple buns with apple and cinnamon. There’s just something nostalgic about the shop. The interior, the paper bread bags, the smell. Ah, the smell of freshly baked bread. You just can’t stop sniffing.”
Who’s Mireille?
You might be surprised to find out that Mireille is a member of our technical team. She’s a graduated goldsmith with an arts degree in her pocket. For six years she was on stage with Dutch comedian Bert Visscher. Because it wasn’t easy making a living as an artist, she started doing some technical work as well. Now she’s making her way back into the spotlight, because she’s studying to become an actress. Only one more year to go. As a kid she wanted to become a witch. Her brothers often say that she succeeded. Growing up with these two big brothers made her into a tough cookie herself. Maybe that’s the reason Mireille can easily stand her ground in a man’s world.
