Visitors of De Wallen (Dutch for Red Light District) might look surprised when they suddenly see a DJ behind the red windows. Red Light Radio is an online radio station and international music platform based in the red light district. They have been broadcasting daily shows of local and international artists since 2010. What started as a passion project of two friends, became a large player in the Amsterdam music industry that organises parties and concerts and collaborations with festivals, museums & other cultural partners all over the world. Spot some of Amsterdam’s finest dj’s there.

It might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about De Wallen but we need to talk about this: shopping. The area is filled with shops with a variety of record stores, bakeries, a condom shop and fashion stores. The latter is become more prominent with new fashion brands opening their flagship stores all over the canals. Like Pop Trading Company, a fashion and skateboard shop founded by Peter Kolks and Ric van Rest. So yeah, you might end up spending your money at the Red Light District one way or another.

FOOD & DRINK
Did you know the Red Light District is one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam? There’s plenty of historic tours to take. Brewery De Prael and their tasting room are located at the site of a former auction house and cartwright’s workshop along the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. Later it became one of Amsterdam’s first breweries. A great place to see some of the historic sites whilst enjoying a cold one. Not in the mood for beer? Check out coffee shop Quartier Putain around the corner for a good cup of liquid gold (or hip people-watching).
