This is for the traveler who wants to be alongside the locals, rather than just skimming its illuminated surface.
So, zip up your coat. Forget your wet socks. Here’s how you actually do autumn in the Dutch capital, assuming you’ve got the stomach for it.
Camera Japan Festival
Forget the polite, sanitized version of Japan. Here they’re serving up the weird and the visceral: obscure indie films, raw documentaries, and unapologetic street food. A collision of Tokyo’s not-so-mainstream and Amsterdam, and exactly where you want to be when the autumn rain starts coming down sideways.
October 1st till the 4th
Cinekid
Head over to the old industrial gasworks at Westergas for Cinekid if you’re with the family. It’s a massive film and media festival that respects its young audience. Expect brilliant international cinema, interactive art, and virtual reality setups designed to spark some real curiosity.
October 10th & 11th
Jaap Eden Baan
Whether you’re with the kids or not, make your way to the Jaap Eden baan. Amsterdam’s legendary outdoor ice rink is unpretentious, deeply nostalgic, and completely local. Lace up, feel the autumn in your lungs, and glide under the floodlights before warming your freezing hands around a glühwein.

ADE
The Amsterdam Dance Event takes over everything from intimate daytime vinyl sets in local record shops to raw, sweat-drenched industrial spaces out in Nieuw-West. It’s a relentless, five-day marathon where the music dictates the terms. You cram into a dark room, stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the locals, and just surrender to the shared pulse until the sun comes up. We also participate in the festivities, but you probably already knew that.
October 21st till the 25th
Museumnacht
Come early November, Amsterdam throws open the doors to over 50 of its museums from 7 PM to 2 AM on a single ticket. That’s Museumnacht. Forget the quiet daytime shuffle past priceless art. Instead, you get a wristband and before you know it you’re drinking a beer next to a Rembrandt while a DJ spins in the lobby. You bike through the autumn drizzle, slightly buzzed, bouncing from obscure contemporary art to the science museum Nemo.
November 7th
Eventually, that horizontal autumn rain is going to break you. When it does, the only logical move is to duck into a bar. There is nothing quite like the refuge of a Dutch pub when the weather turns brutal, fogged-up windows, and the low hum of locals finding comfort at the bottom of a glass.
